Art and Science collisions and collaborations have been encouraged at INAR since many years, and today they are an essential way of creating impact within the surrounding society and interacting with non-scientific communities. The Art&Science activities have materialized in formats such as courses, workshops, seminars, artist-in-residencies, publications and exhibitions weaving together artistic and scientific outcomes in research, publishing and exhibiting. The Climate WhirlArts Program and Periferia – Forest Art Lab exhibition at Hyytiälä Forest Station, a yearly master level course Integrating Art & Sciencein collaboration with University of the Arts Helsinki, Trees Near Usresearch project and exhibition in collaboration with UEF, As Trees Go By exhibition at Serlachius Museums, a joint Nordic Master Arctic Futures: Transdisciplinary Solutions for a Changing World of Nordic-Baltic ABS network led by INAR and other punctual art and science activities are manifestations and fruits of open-minded and cross-border approach; welcoming new ways of understanding and investigating topics such as climate change, forest and peat ecology, and interactions between boreal forest and atmosphere to name a few. The long-term work enhancing the dialogue between the cutting-edge scientific research with other, non-scientific creative initiatives have raised awareness among the international art community. Therefore, Climate Whirl Art&Science program, Hyytiälä Forest Station, and ACCC science community are regularly contacted by artists interested in their research topics or to work as residents at the forest station and visiting other research facilities.
In the next years we aim at fostering and strengthening the national and worldwide networks in the growing field of Art&Science. This will be done by reaching out to new audiences and gaining visibility at cultural and scientific events, exhibitions and festivals. Connections between INAR, UEF, TAU and FMI science makers and creative thinkers, artists and authors will be facilitated during well-thought and curated activities at Hyytiälä Forest Station and at other research stations and science facilities in Finland. These will happen in different levels of interaction: from personal conversations or workshops to public events or media visibility. Also, the art-residences will be enhanced by developing the working conditions more suitable for artmaking and thought.
