Discussion on the broader role of science in addressing climate challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the ACCC event, we will continue the conversation on the broader role of science in addressing climate challenges<\/strong> in the same location starting at 18:00. The Finnish Science Evening panel discussion titled From research to impact: Strategies for accelerating the adoption of academic research in green transition<\/strong> will be moderated by Jussi Impi\u00f6 from Aalto University, and the ACCC representative participating in the discussion will be Professor Tuukka Pet\u00e4j\u00e4, Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) at the University of Helsinki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuukka Pet\u00e4j\u00e4, Professor of Physics at the University of Helsinki<\/strong>. He has over 20 years of research experience related to atmospheric sciences. He is the vice-director of the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research<\/a> responsible for the aerosol domain and research infrastructures. His research interests span from developing measurement techniques to understanding aerosol-cloud-climate-biosphere interactions. \u201cWe measure and model atmospheric particles. We also study climate change and air quality. Maintaining and improving measurements is essential to monitor the overall picture of climate change and air quality\u201d, says Pet\u00e4j\u00e4. <\/strong>

Hanna Lappalainen, Docent in Atmospheric Sciences, University of Helsinki. <\/strong>Her speciality is increasing the societal impact of the ACCC from a science diplomacy perspective. The importance of science diplomacy is growing rapidly as the global geopolitical landscape changes and climate change accelerates. Lappalainen is involved in ERASMUS+ projects to facilitate distance learning of climate competences for young scientists from Eastern Europe and Africa through virtual exchanges. \u201cFinland and the ACCC have expertise and a lot to offer, for example in making measurements in challenging areas, such as the Arctic. We are also able to train young scientists to become versatile and wide-ranging climate experts. To tackle climate change, we need science diplomacy that enables research in challenging environments and engages young scientists around the world.\u201d
